The Meaning of Inclusive Excellence

July 12, 2019 4:50 PM
Dear Members of the UMBC Community,

With national immigration policy once again in the spotlight, it is important for our campus to affirm our commitment to being a welcoming community of inquiring minds.

We take pride as a campus in our reputation as a national model for inclusive excellence where students, faculty, staff, and alumni from more than 100 countries learn from one another’s diverse experiences. In addition, more than two-thirds of the graduates participating in our 2019 Commencement were either born in another country or have parents who arrived in our country as immigrants.

We particularly want to express our care and support for UMBC community members affected by current events related to immigration. Community members seeking to explore these issues are encouraged to contact International Education Services at 410-455-2624, the Division of Student Affairs at 410-455-2393, or the UMBC Counseling Center at 410-455-2472. For information on immigration rights, please visit the American Civil Liberties Union website.

UMBC is and always will be a community that values inclusion, diversity, and respect for all people. We must affirm these values through both our words and our actions.
